CHAPTER ELEVEN
Sunday, October 25th.
Alligator Alley.
Sunday was officially my day off. The police station was closed. Any calls that came in would come straight to me, and if I needed assistance, I would call Littlebear at home.
He lived with his mother, Fawn and his father, Big Bear, and seven brothers and sisters.
I rolled over in bed and my skin prickled. Something wasnât right. What was it? Sitting on the side of my bedâmine and SonnyâsâI tried to wake up and figure out what was wrong.
The house was too quiet. Way too quiet. Pete jumped up off his bed next to mine and stood at my closed bedroom door waiting to go out. âIâm coming.â
I shrugged on a silky robe, tied the belt around my waist and opened the bedroom door. Pete ran down the hall towards the front door wanting out. Rufin and Ardal were both snoring in the bedroom next to mine.
Moonbeam was always the first one up. She made coffee and biscuits and did all kinds of things in the kitchen while we were still asleep, but she wasnât up. Today the house was as silent as a tomb.
Is she sick?
I tapped twice lightly on her bedroom door and she didnât answer. Afraid to turn the knob and look in, I sucked in a big gulp of oxygen and went for it.
Moonbeam lay in her bed, the covers barely disturbed. Lying completely still, Moon looked peaceful enough. Maybe she was just extra tired. Magnoliaâs visit took a lot out of her.
I moved closer to make sure she was breathing and she was. Barely. I had to lean down and listen to make sure.
âMoon.â I touched her arm. âAre you okay?â
She never moved when I touched her. Pete shoved in closer beside me and licked her arm and she didnât flinch. Something was definitely wrong.
I ran into the little bedroom Ruf and Ardal were sharing and touched Rufinâs arm. He sat bolt upright and stared at me still asleep. Taking his hand, I said, âRuf, thereâs something wrong with Moonbeam. I canât wake her up.â
âMaybe sheâs tired.â
âNope. I donât think so.â
âLet me get clothes on.â
Iâd rather you didnât.
Keeping my thoughts about Rufinâs muscular bod to myself, I smiled and left him to dress. I retreated to Moonâs room and waited for him there.
Pete had kept a vigil at Moonbeamâs bedside while I was gone, his head resting on the quilt, his dark doggie eyes watching her. The dog had been acting strange since Sonnyâs second interment. Made me think he was missing Sonny lot. Something was different about Pete.
Rufin moved quietly into the room and his scent gave me the shivers. That mystifying musky witch scent he gave off was more powerful than anything D & G or Armani ever produced. If I could bottle it, Iâd be rich.
He knelt down beside the bed and felt for Moonâs pulse. âSheâs breathing but her heartbeat is slow.â
âIâm calling Doctor Arny.â
âGood idea. He should check her out, but it might not be something he can discern from an ordinary examination.
